2013年中国科学院院士增选候选人推荐工作已经结束。经过院士推荐和归口初选部门推荐,并经中国科学院学部主席团审议,确认2013年中国科学院院士增选有效候选人为391位。中科院院士每两年增选一次。2013年中科院院士增选工作于今年1月启动,计划增选院士的名额不超过60名。此次增选有效候选人的平均年龄为53.7岁。有效候选人产生后,由各学部参加增选的全体院士通过通信评审、会议评审和选举,并经确认、批准和备案等程序后产生新院士。2013年中科院院士增选最终结果将在今年年底公布。
2013年中国工程院院士增选候选人提名、遴选工作已于4月25日结束。经形式审查和中国工程院主席团审定,2013年中国工程院院士增选有效候选人共560人,现予公布。中国工程院院士是国家设立的工程科学技术方面的最高学术称号,为终身荣誉,由选举产生。增选院士每两年进行一次。每次的增选院士名额由中国工程院主席团讨论决定。

由教育部高等学校力学教学指导委员会力学基础课程教学指导分委员会、中国力学学会和周培源基金会共同主办,受教育部高等教育司委托,第九届全国周培源大学生力学竞赛于2013年5月19日正式开始。竞赛旨在促进高等学校力学基础课程的改革与建设,增进青年学生学习力学的兴趣,培养分析、解决实际问题的能力,发现力学创新人才, 为青年学子提供一个展示基础知识和思维能力的舞台。
本次竞赛准备工作自2013年1月发出第一轮通知开始,通过全国各地方学会的积极筹备,组织报名工作,来自全国30个省、直辖市及自治区的共17338名学生报名参加了此次竞赛。本次竞赛超过千人的赛区有江苏省、湖南省、北京市。
第九届全国周培源大学生力学竞赛个人赛于2013年5月19日上午8:30-12:00分别在全国各赛区同时举行。竞赛个人赛由《力学与实践》编委会承办,中国力学学会教育、科普工作委员会、四川大学协办。中国力学学会副理事长刘人怀、周哲玮、龙勉、张洪武,北京市力学学会理事长姚振汉,上海市力学学会理事长仲政,辽宁省力学学会理事长刘迎曦,竞赛领导小组副组长蒋持平,竞赛领导小组成员洪嘉振,竞赛组委会主任委员李俊峰,竞赛组委会副主任委员朱克勤、汤亚南,分别到所在地赛区巡视考场和看望考生。
全国周培源大学生力学竞赛每两年举行一次,本年度为第九届,全国在校大学本科、专科及研究生均可自愿报名参赛。个人赛结束后,竞赛组委会将组织专家组最终评出个人赛特等奖、一等奖、二等奖并在本年度中国力学大会上颁发证书,同时,成绩较好的高校团体将获得参加团体赛资格。团体赛将于2013年8月份举行,自本届开始,团体赛分为“理论设计与操作”和“基础力学实验”两部分,其中“理论设计与操作”团体赛由《力学与实践》编委会承办,四川大学协办,“基础力学实验”团体赛由中国力学学会教育工作委员会承办,西南交通大学协办。最终的团体赛获奖单位同时将在本年度中国力学大会上颁奖。

国际理论与应用力学联合会专题研讨会(简称IUTAM Symposium)——材料与结构冲击实验研究的最新进展于2013年5月6日上午8:30分在西北工业大学举行。会议由西北工业大学和北京国际力学中心承办,西北工业大学航空学院教授、“结构力学行为科学与技术创新引智基地”负责人李玉龙与法国LMT-Cachan实验室教授、西工大千人计划专家赵涵共同担任会议主席,来自中国、法国、加拿大、美国、南非、日本、新加坡、以色列、英国等国共约40位专家与会。袁建平副校长出席开幕式并致辞,国际合作处李华星处长出席开幕式,会议特邀中国科学院院士、国家自然科学基金委杨卫主任作大会报告。
本次会议旨在汇聚世界范围内冲击动力学领域的知名专家,共同研讨交流其最新进展。会议主题包括:冲击试验中的场变量的光学测量技术、冲击试验中的红外及其它温度测量技术、多冲击试验中的多轴加载技术、测试与仿真技术间的相互补充与推进等。
IUTAM是力学研究的最高国际学术组织,参加IUTAM学术研讨会的学者均由会议学术委员会从国际学术界从事相关主题研究的前沿学者中邀请,人数一般控制在40人左右。我国自上世纪80年代开始参与此类学术研讨会的承办申报,先后有北京大学王仁院士、清华大学杨卫院士、南京航空航天大学胡海岩院士、浙江大学朱位秋院士等以各自研究领域的优势赢得IUTAM学术研讨会的举办权,并出任各会议主席。本次会议的成功召开对于提升我校在力学领域,尤其是冲击动力学领域的国际影响力具有积极意义。

Extend the second announcement for ICAST 2013 – The 24th International Conference on Adaptive Structures Technologies, which historically rotates between Asia, the Americas, and Europe. The next ICAST conference will take place in the beautiful island of Aruba, October 7-9, 2013, at the Aruba Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino. Aruba is located in the Caribbean Sea between the mainland regions of North and South America.
I have attached the flyer for the 2nd Call for Papers for ICAST 2013. Information about the conference is also available on the conference website http://www.ICAST2013.com . Abstracts can now be submitted online at the conference website. Registration for the conference will be available as of April 1st, 2013.
ICAST 2013 will be the 24th event in a series of successful international conferences, which have followed the field of intelligent materials and adaptive structures and systems, from its emergence to its current rapid maturity. The conference aims at promoting research, development and use of adaptive structures and technologies through the exchange of scientific results and insight from leading international scholars and specialists. ICAST is a single session conference which provides a forum for discussion of recent advances in the highly multidisciplinary field of smart materials and structures, and encourages the transfer of advanced scientific results from research to application.

Extreme weather and climate events: detection, monitoring, prediction and risk management for developing countries
Workshop Objective:
The extreme weather and climate event is one of the most severe natural disasters, and can affect all sectors of the economy and the environment, including human health and well-beings. In order to reduce the adverse impact of extreme events, many international and domestic efforts have been taken in monitoring and forecasting such events. However we are still confronting with many challenges to reduce weather and climate-induced disasters, especially for developing countries, due to the insufficient innovative research capability and the lack of capacity. In order to enhance the capacity building for developing countries to tackle with the extreme weather and climate events, the international training workshop on “Extreme weather and climate events” will be organized. The international renowned scientists from both developed and developing countries will be invited to deliver lectures related with extreme events, and share their experience with the participants mostly from the developing countries, in coping with the extremes from detection, monitoring, predicting and managing the risk, and finally to foster the sustainable development in developing countries.

Post-doctoral Associate in brain biomechanics, medical imaging
Post-doctoral Associate in brain biomechanics is available at Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH
A post-doctoral associate position funded by the NIH is available at the Thayer School of Engineering, Dartmouth College. This position will support research in in vivo biomechanics of the human brain using stereovision, image-analysis, and finite element modeling. Applicants are expected to have an earned Ph.D. degree in mechanical engineering or biomedical engineering, or a closely related field. Expertise with image analysis and MATLAB is essential. Experience with finite element modeling (e.g., Abaqus) is a plus. This position will involve working with a team of biomechanical researchers and clinicians to analyze stereoscopic images of exposed brain surfaces from patients undergoing open-skull neurosurgery. The post-doc associate will also be expected to participate in preparing research articles, presenting research findings at conference meetings, and contributing to grants. Therefore, excellent writing and communication skills are important.
Dartmouth College is an Ivy League institution. Our lab works closely with researchers in the Advanced Imaging Center and Advanced Surgical Center, Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, as well as with other faculty in the engineering school and school of medicine.

Postdoctoral Research Associate
A research position for a Postdoctoral Research Associate is now available at the working group of Continua Mechanics at the TU Darmstadt, Germany, led by Professor Dr.-Ing. Charalampos Tsakmakis.
The position is fulltime fixed-term for two years.
The main task is the development of a
thermodynamical consistent constitutive model for micropolar and micromorphic
plasticity and its numerical implementation into a finite element environment.
Preliminary work has been done, so that a satisfactory closure is possible
within the given scope of two years. Applicants should match the following
requirements:

deep knowledge of nonlinear Continuum Mechanics

在标准赛道进行长跑比赛,一多半都不是在直道上跑步,而是在弯道上跑步。由于人平时走路基本上都是按照直道方式进行,弯道就成了几乎所有人的弱项,需要特殊训练才能掌握技巧,因此弯道技术成了长跑的重要技术。做科研也是如此,一帆风顺的科研基本上是没有的,生活中不遇到挫折也是不可思议的事情。可是我们主观上对未来的预期却是直线思维,期望都是顺利的。这就造成了主客观的不一致,使得我们在处于逆境时心理上会出现波动,甚至扭曲。实际上,如果把科研生活中的逆境或者挫折看做是标准跑道上的弯道,那么就需要加强弯道技术的训练,掌握好弯道技术,就能做到相对领先。下面几个问题值得思考。
一、弯道必然会有。我在一篇文章(为什么科研总会走弯路http://blog.sciencenet.cn/blog-39416-665460.html) 中谈到,科研总会走弯路,不管是人的潜意识结果,还是自然变化的丰富性超出了人的能力,弯道是不可避免的。如果说标准跑道是一个近似圆周,必然出现弯道,自然发展的规律也是螺旋式上升,自然也有弯道。因此,不以我们意志为转移的是,我们都会遇到弯道。社会的发展、经济的成长都有其周期性,这种周期性自然就包括低谷,也是一种弯道。尤其是经济发展非常繁荣的时候,一定不能认为可以永远繁荣,未来一定会有曲折,会有低潮。
二、弯道对每个人都是挑战。除了经过特别训练的人,每个人都对即将到来的弯道束手无策,大多数人还会象直道一样去预测未来,行为也和直道一样去处理问题。跑过长跑的人都知道,在弯道的时候,人是很难受的,身体会出现不适应。在直道的时候,可以看做是机械运动,人是省力的,就是不断的变化让人觉得很消耗。但是毕竟弯道是在不断转弯的过程,和直道有着本质的不同,用直道的行为去处理弯道无疑问是没有效率的。如果说直道是实力的表现,而弯道更是一种技巧的展示。在科研上,我们经常看到各种不同课题的兴衰。兴旺的时候,人人都想参与,人人都在兴高采烈的参加。衰落的时候,人人都会离开这个课题,转而追求其他热门的课题。这是人的一种逐利的本能引导人向着局部最优的选择前进。这好比,参加了一个比赛,跑到弯道的时候,就换了一个场地,重新参加另一个比赛。如果用这个观点来看,似乎很好笑,也不可理解。但是现实中,我们就是这样处理弯道的,不是换了一个比赛,就是用错误的方式处理弯道。
三、弯道是最大的机遇。如果人仅仅靠硬实力,那么世界就变得非常单调。只要称一称每个人的体重,测量一下每个人的肌肉强度,通过科学的计算就能确定比赛的胜负,那就少了很多精彩和乐趣。而弯道恰恰需要实力之外的东西,那就是技巧。由于弯道不是每个人天生的技能,只有那些熟练掌握这个技巧的人才能胜出。一个后进国家要在某一个产业上超过先进国家,不能选择在该产业兴旺的时期,而是要选择在一个产业衰落的时期去追赶。在兴旺的时期,所有的国家和企业都会大量投入资源,并且全力关注,这时候资源显得非常紧张,竞争非常惨烈。在衰败的时期,大多数企业都会选择裁员,人力容易获取。大多数参加者选择离开,机会就留给了能够坚持的人。用非常有效的姿势,用不同于顺境的心理,不仅仅是能够获得更好的发展速度,还能在大家都虚弱的时候,迎头赶上。这是一种很聪明的做法。
四、课题的关键突破点也一定在弯道期。很多课题并不是在顺风顺水的情况下获得突破的,相反,很多重要的课题都是在艰难的时期获得了突破,后面的顺利恰恰是由前面艰难的突破换来的。在企业经营顺利的情况下,企业往往不重视关键技术的研究,而容易陷入盲目的扩张,沉迷于销售和数钱。这都不有利于技术的发展和进步。国家也一样,在发展非常顺利的时期,就忽视了很多关键的社会问题的研究,而沉醉于享受太平盛世。相反,到了困难时期,很多人才能意识到有些问题不能绕过,才能逼着自己去面对一些问题,经过努力,才可能突破一些问题。
五、时间的滞后性决定了弯道的价值。每一个课题都有其生命周期,每一个突破都需要时间。这种时间上的滞后性告诉我们,我们的成功不是现在,而是在未来的某一个时间,因此不能用现在形势简单的预测未来。如果现在处于困境,那么我们唯一能做的就是更加踏踏实实的走好眼下的路,更加潜心专注我们自己的问题,等到问题突破了,直道自然就在眼前。好比,冬天来了,春天还会远吗。当我们遇到挫折的时候,往往正是我们成长的时候。成功给我们成功的经验,失败的价值和成功的价值一样值得赞美。
